Same!
Fair enough because it is so innovative on many levels at the time, but Godard lack of human psychology and compassion for women in general really makes me feel bad on this one. I had to take my distance to enjoy it.
Not my dear Jean-Luc's best but it's 4 stars plus 1, only because it was my first at the Portuguese Cinematheque.
Although it's not explictly about it, to me this is THE Godard film about how sex and romance co-exist with youthful intellectual fervour.
I sure do love Jean-Pierre Léaud's eyebrows in this film . . . Anyway, Godard's women are as superficial as ever in this film, but I liked it overall (meh) and I thought it had some interesting ideas behind all its artsy-fartsy fluff.
They were playing themselves. Miss 19. The boy actors were slightly exaggerated into young intellectuals. Though apparently Léaud always studied what Godard put into his films.
Love this film just as much as Breathless, Pierrot Le Fou and Le Mépris. Check out the wonderful trailer !
Masculin Feminin .... um dos meus preferidos do Gordard! vai ficar na minha memória por razões muito especiais.
I love films that make jealous of the characters, or the era in which they live. Masculin Feminin is the epitome of that. I feel like statements like "the children of marx and coca cola" give away a skewed and misguided perspective, but that is coming from a 2010's American perspective. But he hit the nail on the head when he's talking about films, and the films we want to live. I would like to live this film.
It took me a while to realise I had watched this film already. Good, with some parts much better than others. Very quotable, but still I find Godard's view of women problematic.
much different from what I thought it would be, deffinitely one of the more challenging films from "60's" Godard (at least to me). I know it's not a film I'll be able to watch any old time, but I realize it's a film i'll get something out of each viewing. Plus it's a very beautiful movie.
Bumper my rating to a five from a four. I've seen this before, but damn was it so much better the second time! :D Savvy
Does anyone know where you can buy the song Chantal Goya sings in this? I think it is called Tu M'as Trop Menti?...
2nd or 3rd time seeing this, and am always satisfied with it. I enjoy the conversations in all of his films, as words and speech are very important to him, but Masculin Feminin has a specific sort that interest me. The look into the lives of each misguided sex is always something entertaining, but here, with the help of Jean-Pierre Leaud & Anna Karina's pop star doppelganger Chantal Goya you have something unique.
The children of Marx and coca-cola turned out a little lamer than even Godard expected.
I've always felt about this one that Godard tried to be a bit Truffaut-ish.. and did it very well, except that this film is over-politicized for my taste.
I watched this last night and am not really sure what I think about it - it struck me as being slightly pretentious, although this may be because I was not able to appreciate many of the references. It reminds me a lot of La Chinoise. Many of Godard's films leave me feeling a bit bemused - A Bout de Souffle is definitely my favourite of his so far - but I'm planning to watch Vivre Sa Vie tonight so that may change!
