So often films start out great but go downhill. I personally felt this was the opposite. Fortunately the characters got a bit better as the film went on also. For a while there they were really not likable and you didn’t love to hate them either, they were just….there. But like I said, they got better as the film went on. It’s not one of Allen’s best films, but I always love the sets and locations in his films, the upper class lifestyles and his choice of music.

While it has a creative concept behind it, MELINDA AND MELINDA ultimately can’t seem to make it work. The idea is that the same story will be told twice, once as a comedy, and once as a tragedy, unfortunately the story Allen chose to tell was not interesting and neither version benefited the other with its mirror image. The best one by far is the comedy section, mainly because the best thing about this movie is Will Ferrell’s performance as Allen’s foil. Unfortunately the comedy portion is way too short, while the tragedy segment is way too long and is an extremely boring affair. Radha Mitchell is a fine actress but doesn’t seem to know what to do here, as the script doesn’t really provide much. It’s an interesting failure from Allen, too bad it couldn’t have been more than that because it certainly deserves to.
