Kyle my friend you have come around!
In accord with characters decontextualized from individual histories, the plot’s dull incoherence isolates narrative moments which come from, and are going, nowhere; For Crockett, the present is primal. The fragmented women of the 2nd and 3rd-to-final compositions, Tubb’s reality – his ideal, represent the crux of a crisis implicated by fleeting DV glances, met head-on in the blunt singularity of the closing image.
When I first watched this movie in the theatre I was really let down but as I watched it a few more times the movie really grew on me.
I love the tv series for the '80s setting, the music, the visuals and the noir taste of many episodes. This movie is too action-packed, too posh and full of chic gadgets... call it "cops shoots bad guys" but don't call it miami vice. also, the only movie about narcos were no coke is showed!
I was one of the many that initially polarized the film during my first viewing of it years ago. Now I know that I was wrong.
How in the hell did I mistake this for a piece of shit? That...that was amazing. Savvy
One of the most mis marketed films in recent years. Mann has trouble finding the narrative drive of his early films amidst the abstractions however the sheer sense of disillusionment/loss underlying what's on the surface a typical cop drama makes for one of the most subversive studio films of the 00's. There's an existentialism to the final shootout that's rarely seen in action films. A must see.
Ignore the critical reevaluation since this came out: it's still total garbage. Scenes are shapeless, tone is all over the place, and the whole thing is dramatically flat. Everyone says it's beautiful - but for $150 million, isn't that the least we can expect?
gone is the cool music, the cool characters, the cool car, the cool boat, the cool way the series used music to tell the story, the terrific jan hammer score of the series (music is god awful in this). i just cant go on. if youve never seen a miami vice tv series you might like it, as a fan and watcher of every episode a god awfull horrible horrible dissapointment.
terrible god awful. 20 year olds need to watch the series then watch the movie before reviewing it. the series is a masterpiece compared to this sad outing. especialy since tv to movie movies are generaly horrid to begin with.
No film I've seen from the last decade has the power of Mann's images here. They are both primal and wholly new. Human beings are transformed into wisps by digital, floating across grainy nightscapes. At times its like watching ghosts in some endless, cyclical game, snuffed out of existence by popping muzzle flashes. A world of ephemeral beauty, illusory human connections, and ever-shifting identities.

i feel like this one was a little more garbled than the rest of his movies, but the parts that are good are fantastic and well worth a watch.
Is it just me or does the movie get increasingly digital as it plays? Mann's music choices were poor, and the movie itself wasn't any better.
Solid action film from start to finish. Someone needs to talk to his music supervisor though
Dare I use THAT word.....okay I'm gonna do it. This film is underrated....there, I said it.
Adrenalin-fuelled male wish fullfillment. Go-fast boats, sports cars, night clubs, the astonishingly beautiful Gong Li... Trash of the highest quality. All surface shimmer, but so what?
**1/2 No sooner seen than forgotten. I saw it when it was theatrically released in 2006 during holidays in Cornwall. As I remember well the gorgeous landscapes of King Arthur's homeland and not at all Michael Mann's film, I decided to give it a second chance tonight. Well, I must say that I didn't look at my watch during 140 minutes and I did in fact appreciated Gong Li, Gong Li and, let's see, well, Gong Li. And, after all, to observe an Irishman and a Chinese woman dance the salsa in a Cuban night-club is a must-see for any movie lover. No sooner seen than forgotten, though.
why they just didnt borrow music themes from the show i might of halfway liked this, this and the a-team movie badly needed the music all the way in and some tie in to the original show. mission impossible 1 and maverick are the only tv to movie movies ive liked (and star trek 1-4 and first contact). music is just a part of a character in the show. also lacks the shows humor and style.
Utterly terrible, this films fans are only 20 somethings that apparently never got to watch the terrific miami vice tv series. this is one of the worst tv to movie movies i have ever seen, ferril is absolutely horrid in this (although gets worse in alexander). The tv show was terrific for its music something this show just skips like all horrid tv to remakes. Made for people who havent seen the tv show utterly horrid
If you watch this, be sure it is the theatrical cut, the superior version. This film is one of the masterpieces of the 00s. Mann is truly probing new grounds in cinema.
