This is one of the most powerful, engaging and darkest films I have watched in quite some time. At the same time, it is also offers us a refreshing and realistic look at the notions of redemption and salvation. The message seems clear; redemption is not what it seems to be. Salvation is not becoming free of the past, it is not freedom from deadly fate. Salvation is about choosing how we will meet that fate. Will we meet fate on OUR terms or on IT’S terms? Will we gravel before its irresistible power or will we stand tall and proud, in the manner of a free human being? The choice is ours.

At first, I thought it was going to be about freedom… but it turned out to be about freedom of choice. Yet, the life of one woman who has chosen to end her life is saved against her will by a total stranger, who had just committed murder in order to win his own freedom. The new millennium begins with fireworks and a baptism in the ocean… but the killer-turned-savior is shot to death. Nothing had fundamentally changed— and the future seems just as precarious. Great scores … great shots of the city and its narrow streets.

From the acclaimed director of ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ and Oscar- Winning “Central Station” comes another sensational masterpiece…
Rio de Janeiro. The last day of the century. For some, it is the day for hope and celebration. For others, it is another day of agony and never-ending struggle. For Joao, this is the day he is freed from prison under one condition; he has to track down a ex-convict and kill him. Thus, this is the day that will shape the rest of his life. For the sign language teacher, Maria, this is just another ordinary day; until her husband of many years disappears without a trace… As these two lost souls throw themselves into the out-of-control and the energized streets of New Year’s Eve Rio, their stories and worlds collide in the most unexpected ways. While they also unknowingly create a chain reaction of events that will change the lives of many, this could also possibly bring the long awaited consolation that they both have been waiting for a very long time… In the tradition of recent Hits like ’Crash" and “Babel,” Salles and Thomas presents us a story as equally political and challenging as these Oscar Winners, from a area of the world that rarely looks this lively, dangerous and still breathtakingly beautiful on large screen. Shot entirely at location in Rio, “Midnight” delivers a electrifying and haunting ride that will stay with you for years to come…
