This is one of my favorite films of all time. Falk and Cassavettes are incredible but Elaine May deserves more respect then she gets for her work directing this. Just because it's nothing like her comedies I honestly think some people suppose Cassavettes ghost-directed it or something.

Went into this with high hopes. If anything, I think it's hindered by it's rather lame plot (Cassavetes on the lamb, Falk his dubious buddy). After all this talk about May shooting reels and reels of improvised dialogue, it might have been more enjoyable to see these guys sharing actual stories, I think. It made me wonder what was left on the cutting room floor.

What an outstanding film. The on-screen chemistry between Cassavetes and Peter Falk is magical. They truly don't make 'em like this anymore.

"Ishtar" notwithstanding, Elaine May is/was a pretty good filmmaker.

Just saw this at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and urge anyone who hasn't ever seen it to see it. Cassavetes' performance is unreal. A meditation on manhood.

One of my favorite fiilms. One of the best films about the complexities and ambiguities of long-term friendships. Do you even like this person you have known all your life? Do you even know him? Extraordinary acting, great dialogue. And a lesson in the difficulty in getting an original film to an audience - a small video store (now closed) near my home never rented it once in over ten years.

I'm sure May must have watched Mean Streets before writing this. It's a far superior work to Scorsese's vastly overrated movie, but there are too many obvious similarities for me to ignore.

You might think it;s a Cassavetes film, but it's not. Actually, Elaine May wrote and directed this unusual tale of friendship. http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2010/06/limits-of-friendship.html

I LOVEEEE this movie lots....especially when Cassavetes tried to reminisce how Peter Falk talked like echo or something like that.

I love this movie. Elaine May's Heartbreak Kid and A New Leaf need proper DVD treatment. And this broad has to make some more movies. I don't care if Ishtar bombed! She's brilliant! I'm going to have a stern talking to with Hollywood. This is a comment, not a review. A review would take too much time and thought for me, but I would definetly blow some minds.

The best Cassavetes not directed by Cassavetes. A dark, gritty and realistic portrait of friendship. Falk and Cassavetes give excellent performances in a film beyond the traditional genre of crime.
