DIR Kenneth Anger

MUSIC Koudlam

Synopsis

The film, shot in Anger’s psychedelic, overlay-heavy style, captures 11 members of the Missoni family as they disport against a black background and occasionally in in a pastoral setting, done up in wigs and looking somewhat bewildered. The film has a distinctly cultish atmosphere, recalling the mystical goings-on in the artist’s previous films, from “Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome” (1954) to “Scorpio Rising” (1963) and “Lucifer Rising” (1970-81) —artinfo.com

Kenneth Anger

Kenneth Anger is an independent filmmaker and author. He claims to have appeared as the child prince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), but Warner Brothers production reports and casting sheets conclusively document that a little girl, child actress Sheila Brown, actually played the role. His career has been recognized with life achievement awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics, the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Silverlake Film Festival, the Mar del Plata Film Festival, and the Maya Deren Award for Experimental Film/Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Among other notable honors, he received the Poetic Film Prize at Festival du Film Maudit in Biarritz, France in 1949, which was presented by Jean Cocteau. Anger’s work has screened around the world, including at the Institut Francais de Vienne in Austria, the Galerie… read more

Is this basically Kenneth Anger turning in a blatant copy of his 'Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome' for cold, hard cash? Of course it's always nice to see a new work from Anger, this particular project seems a little bit like taking something that was once adventurous and cutting-edge, and turning it into something hollow or ornamental; a piece of product or promotion. Equally exciting and disheartening.
