"Life Of Brian" sacrifices "Holy Grail's" silly, joke-after-joke humour for a more coherent story satirizing the misguidance of religious followers and how blindly they will follow anyone just to worship God. Doesn't totally stay away from surreal jokes, though. Has plenty of hilarious moments (the spaceship, Biggus Dickus etc.) and ends on a nice, uplifting song. The most intelligent of the Python films.
Sillier than Young Frankenstein. Better locations than This is Spinal Tap. Able to create laughs on the slimmest premise... Look! up on the cross... It's.... Monty Python's Life of Brian! Bottom line: There's more historical truth here than in many a more serious movie!
Their best film and yet, I will always think of watching Holy Grail first.
The best of Python on film with a structured narrative from which to develop the set pieces and a nice level of religious critique without becoming too pious in its own right. Try and see through the oft-quoted lines and succumb to the delicious silliness.
In my opinion, one of the worst Criterion releases until now. I’m maybe impervious to British humour and admit that I didn’t find the film hilarious. A smile or two, that’s all. It’s as if a dozen TV shows had been pasted one after the other. A DVD released between Ingmar Bergman’s AUTUMN SONATA and Carl-Theodor Dreyer’s JOAN OF ARC. Neither Charles S. Chaplin, neither Buster Keaton, neither Harry Langdon, neither Jerry Lewis nor Woody Allen are in the Criterion collection. Unadvisable.
Definitely not as good as The Holy Grail, but Graham Chapman steals every scene he's in. Plus, always look on the bright side of life, best part in the entire film, hahahaha.
All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Why do Americans prefer the Holy Grail over this one? Anyway, Brian not only satirizes religious impulses and group thinking, but also attacks Hollywood Biblical films and 70s era revolutionary politics. The troupe's most meaningful film, though not their best (that would be the scabrous Meaning of Life).
