after her highly acclaimed debut feature, ratcatcher, lynne ramsay needed 3 years to make another film. that film turned out to be morvern callar. a story about a girl’s journey at finding the best way to grief and to gain freedom with her best friend. and personally, it’s even better than ratcatcher.
the acting from samantha morton is marvelous. the way she captured a lost soul is spot on. from the sadness to the anger, from the smile to the alienation.
but the best thing about this film is the cinematography and the soundtrack. the way the colors are played in this film is pure delicacy. the film is not scared at using both blaring lighting and minimal lighting. with the combination of a great and familiar songs collection for the soundtrack from the likes of can, the mamas and the papas, nancy sinatra, lee hazlewood, and many more; the result is delicious and hypnotic at the same time.
don’t believe it? just try use your eyes and ears to the fullest extent when you watch lynne ramsay’s morvern callar.
