It's crazy how I loved this film when I first saw it, and now I'm like "meh . . . "

After seeing two films by Joon-ho Bong, I think I've caught on to what his movies are about: passionately devoted, though not necessarily healthy, families. "Mother" examines a small two-person family through a decidedly Hitchcockian ordeal while his previous "The Host" tested an extended family through the grinder of a monster movie.

I liked Mother quite a bit although I like it the least of his films (I love the others, in particular the hugely underrated Barking Dogs Don't Bite). But I think Trevork is spot on.

(part 3, continued from previous post) And that's something Bong Joon-Ho does not accomplish with Mother, either visually or through its narrative.

(...continued from previous post) ...are vastly more stunning both visually and in terms of narrative story-telling. As I said before, Mother is a film that follows convention in many ways, from building tension (closet scene with water bottle falling) to surrealist scenes (see Karaoke scene) to the final flashback twist. Park may use these conventions as well, but he does it with--for the most part--original style.

There's a lot to love about this film from its themes to its opening and closing scenes. Still, in the end, Mother is a film that follows convention. Lee Chang-Dong once commented--not in a critical way--in an interview that Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-Ho made films for the sake of being cinematic. In general, this is a valid grouping. But Park Chan-wook's films, though they might not be profound, are vastly more...

See above post for continuation. (Other things to love: of course Kim Hye Ja's performance (though at times it feels forced, not because of the performance, but because of the writing), its humor, and the scenes between mother and son.)

Haha, you don't argue with Lee Chang-dong, but "Mother" was perfect.

I disagree. It may not have been a terrible movie, but it was far from perfect.

The real Sympathy for Lady Vengeance? Enjoyed the film, story, characters and acting. But I'm also torn on my feelings towards the Mother character. Does the end justify the means.

interesting crime story/sophoclean tragedy with good old brutal Korean fatalism and great style to go with it.

dramatic, suspenseful, mysterious, eerie, humorous...all in one great Korean package. Was definitely on par with the Host; hope to see more of Joon-ho's work.

Bong Joon Ho seems to love exploring investigative stories. Although his best work still remains Memories of Murder, Mother explores a totally different dynamic. The lead actress Hye-Ja Kim is phenomenal and reminds me of Ellen Burstyn in the way she talks and acts. Couple of scenes really stand out - the spilt water touching the hand, the 'Meridian Point' last scene and the confrontation with Do-Joon at the jail.

The beginning of the movie was a bit slow and superfluous. However, after 30 mn or so, it becomes amazing. Bong Joon Ho tells his story without heavy accents yet in such a powerful way. The end is so unexpected that it makes up for the slowish start.

Loved it. After a incredible beginning, the very middle was a little too slow for me but the end made up for that and then some. Absolutely gorgeous cinematography and some absolutely fantastic performances, especially from the lead. Highly recommended. Just incredible.

Wonderdfully rendered. Especially loved the ending, and how it was so subtly yet cleverly tied to the middle. How she used the needle to forget the past. The juxtapositions among the different sections of the movie are finely crafted. The cinematography and score are beautiful. All in all, a great film.

Excellent, excellent thriller. A great character driven story that pulls off one of the most satisfying conclusions to a thriller I've seen in a long time. Great cinematography and acting both make the film a triumph.

As ever, Bong is an acquired taste. Linger too long on the plot "twists" and they might enrage you...even still, for Kim Hye-ja's mesmerizing performance, it ranks above Bong's former triumph, The Host.

i really enjoyed this film. Especially the characters and, how weird it was in certain parts. Like the scene wi th a young couple during sex, speaking non-sense words out loud... Or maybe the words did make sense in some outside-of-the-box way that im still trying to figure out... Plus, it was really cool how the story unfolded through action, instead of us being told what would happen next.

This triumphs because it understands that thrillers aren‘t just about the plot, they are also about the characters in them.

Wow, last 30 mins blew my mind and brought the entire movie together for me. The difference between this and a good hollywood thriller is its tone and the way it's told. The slow build, the climactic twist not being the entire point of the movie and having some breathing space for the end of the film felt so refreshing and masterfully shot. Loved it. If you think your mum obsesses about you, see this!

Very good music, good acting and some interesting shots. But in general, it's just a crime, thriller movie cliché. And for some reason, I'm getting tired of these kind of wanna be-Hollywood Korean movies, it's boring.
