This does in fact seem like something that Melville would be influenced by. Elliptical, enigmatic, supreme cool! And lovely use of clashing, droning guitar melodies.
I understand now why Martin Scorsese admired so much Irving Lerner. With a simple guitar melody playing while Vince Edwards is dressing up, Irving Lerner emerges as a one of a kind director. The rest of Murder by Contract is in accordance with this mythical beginning. Masterpiece.
Super cool B-movie about an existential hit-man slowly plotting the execution of a star witness. With a spare electric guitar score that owes more than a nod to "The Third Man", and a cast of low-chain character actors adding humor; an independent film with a free form feel.
The most innovative crime thriller I have seen to date. The guitar score supplements wonderfully to the narrative.
Does anyone know if Mellville ever commented on this film? It's as if he lifted his style intact from it.
Classic quote: 'You like cigars? You like cigars, food.......fat women?
'How do you know I like fat women?'
I can tell by looking in your eyes--its psychology!'
