Born in the Basque town of Zaráuz on 1.1.1944. He studied film at the IDHEC in Paris and began making films in the mid-sixties; his films were considered provocative in Spain under Franco. Iglesia makes use of popular genres such as the thriller and the horror film in order to convey his social criticism; he was also one of the first to address homosexuality in his films.
