I love David Strathairn in this. Norah Jones is fine but Portman is god-awful.
One of those films that seems tailor-made to move me and connect with me. People say Norah Jones is insipid and bland here? Maybe so. I guess that makes me insipid and bland, too. Either way - I connected with her here.
Not the fiasco some made it out to be. The move to English language merely foregrounds the melodramatic, though this is nothing new to Wong. A minor piece in both scope and execution, but I enjoyed the film's lush colours and hopeful romanticism.
a nice dramatic & sympatic movie about love... sometimes we must go far to find ourselves & the right things beside us..!
Underrated though flawed. It isn't in the Mood for Love, but Wai has just such beautiful way of using images and characters that sweep me in under his romantic spell. It is miscast and Natalie Portman's accent is awful. Norah Jones's improving performance kind of worked in retrospect to the narrative. Call me out on loving the style over substance, but I can just lose myself in the visual artistry, regardless.
This was even worse than I remembered it being (though I think Norah Jones is better than almost all of the legitimate thespians that surround her). On the other hand, the scene with Chan Marshall was as luminous as it ever was, a moment that makes you wish a director would give her a leading role in the future and hope that director isn't Wong Kar-wai.
i liked the way it looked, however it lost the gravity it should have had from the very start.
My Blueberry Nights actually talked me out of liking it. The cast was pretty/mostly decent (even if they were playing horrible southern caricatures) but the direction was fidgety and my biggest problem with the movie. Tack on pretentious and silly to the point where I really couldn't bring myself to care.
Definitely not one of his best, but I enjoyed it, especially that last scene the still shows. His use of music and cinematography is impeccable, as usual.
I saw this a few years ago, I found it to be rather weak. Since then I have become a huge fan of 2046 and In The Mood For Love and I would love to see this again, as I may now understand what he was getting at?
Visually stimulating and well acted, this is a must see for Wong Kar Wai fans, but for casual movie-goers, you won't feel cheated if you miss this one. Still, it's worth a look, but not a must see.
It seems a little lighter than WKW's previous films, but despite it's reception, i really likem this film, visually it a treat and the actors, including Norah Jones, are perfect. We want more Mr. Kar-Wai...
