The Raw Truth

By Danny Kana on April 21, 2011

I first noticed the remarkable shots upon viewing Bill Douglas’ “My Childhood”.

The film follows Jamie, a poor young boy being raised by his paternal grandmother, and living with his half brother. Jamie’s childlike curiously leads him to explore around town, and he befriends a German POW, and even teaches the German how to speak a little english.

The complexity of the shots really blew me away. Especially the train sequence. Jamie’s half-brother is there to comfort him, although they fight often too.

Douglas manages to turn simple moments of this story into stunning visuals. His use of sound adds to the film tremendously, and the lack of dialogue in my opinion makes the picture even more intriguing.

The ending sequence was lovely…..

This sad story will stick with me for awhile.
