There were several rough spots, like the Shakespeare-inspired dialogue. At times it felt unnecessary and out of place. At first I didn't even understand why it was there, I blamed Reeves of wooden delivery. But overall it was good. The first third was the weakest, but the it became really bittersweet and moving, especially the campfire scene. It's a tour de force by Phoenix though; a naive and sweet performance.
Not a perfect film by any means, but such a great product of its time. Beautiful acting, beautiful actors. Music, photography, wardrobe, all wonderful. The style is quirky and unconventional, albeit in a very self-conscious and slightly naive manner — all part of the joy. Just one more comment: River Phoenix.
keanu reeves and river phoenix at their best. i didn't even expect to like the film because of a weird preconception i had with Gus Van Sant, but this is such a gem.
Oh, the great gaping hole of nothing which is Keanu Reeves performances. Any light it gives is just reflected light from River Phoenix.
fascinating with a brilliant performance from River Phoenix a story of loneliness and friendship truly beautiful
i really regretted not buying the DVD two years ago.. now i can't find a copy of it anywhere.. talk about wrong decision..
Not my favourite of Van Sant's films. It does, however, contain one of the most striking performances in all of cinema. River Phoenix is able to portray vulnerability to a heartbreaking degree - a rare feat within male actors.
Damn the philosophy or deep text. This isn't daring. This movie is simply boring. Sorry. All I saw was paper-thin emotions, sets and light ,wispy shots that gets boring in seconds. Mostly remote. Phoenix's performance was gloriously reckless, though.
