I can't say that I have ever watched a documentary quite like this. Surreal; nightmarish. I loved it.

Guy Maddin's dreamy, silent-influenced style usually works in his short films, but falters when dragged out to 80 minutes, mainly because he lacks a narrator's vocals. Grade: C+.

Guy Maddin calls his film a "docu-fantasia", I could not find a more fitting description.

incredible, maddin's extension of self into Winnipeg produces a unique intimacy that one can't help but get absorbed in.

I enjoy Guy Maddin's style, but this film seemed just too personal for me... it was hard to really get anything out of it.

Guy Maddin is the most interesting Canadian film dir. He still prefers using early tools of cinema such as B&W, silence films with limited subtitles or tags and supporting soundtracks.

Astonishing. A film that puts you under a trance. It's like experiencing someone else's dream, or nightmare. This is only more confirmation that Guy Maddin is a one-of-a-kind genius.

A weird, charming fable-poem to the city of Winnipeg. There's hockey, of course, and the romance of horrifically frozen horses. Also, stampeding gay bison and Nazis. So much strange, so much snow.

Amazing. So this is what it looks like when Maddin directs a "documentary".

I don't even know how to attempt to review this as it defies genre's. I have a love/hate feeling for it because it's unlike anything I've ever seen but some of its 'quirks' didn't quite work for me. It's without a doubt a technical tour-de-force but its a film that I respect and admire more than love. Still its a 4/5(possibly a 4.5/5) for me and is one that will most likely be better on repeat viewings.

My Winnipeg is director Guy Maddin's autobiography on screen. Constructed of re-enactments, expressionist photography, archival footage, and personal photographs it's a meditation on Maddin's life, Winnipeg, homosexuality, heterosexuality, bison, first nation beliefs, seances, hockey, communism, nuns, secret doorways, and so many other things to list. It's a bit too smarmy and self-conscious to be convincing though.

But it's a film I can't help but love, because it's so darkly comic and personal. It's on Netflix instant, go watch it.

Fast paced, personal and ultimately heartwarming. Guy Maddin crafts a kind of film I've never before seen; it seamlessy shifts from his recollection of completely plausible drama to surreal, completely implausible and often funny memories of his hometown and his growing up in it.

Frenzied, fast and fun. I love Maddin’s use of different film textures to capture personal memories and exorcise Winnipeg’s ghosts. The silent film interlude about the seance was particularly striking. Maddin’s narration is beautifully written and captures the spirit not only of his city but of anyone’s home town. Quickly flashing title cards nicely emulates the way thoughts can flit half-formed through one’s mind.
