My favorite film of Easwood's I've seen so far: but considering I've hated the others, doesn't mean much. Really only works for me because of the performances.
Despite some slightly over-done acting and flamboyant scripting made awkward by the look, feel, and composition never surpassing the expectations of your general well-budgeted thriller, I nearly teared up once or twice. Some surprisingly human moments in a movie mostly shrouded in darkness.
Reality is still eleven-year-old boys, locked in a cellar, imagining what our lives would've been like if we'd escaped.
Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon are surprisingly pretty good in this. But Sean Penn is a total ham! The story has its moments, but it still drags a lot.
denish lehane novels do not half make great films. clint eastwood has never been as good before or after this. sean penn gives his best performance by a mile, in an oddly entrancing manner. kevin bacon never stops providing the perfect support to the more extravagant actors. tim robbins gives a heartbreaking and damaged performance. and the plot has twists and turns which are as brilliant as they are dark.
Eastwood has really shown himself to be a talented director, but his old-fashioned Hollywood studio style doesn't quite work for me in this film. It needs something grittier, maybe someone younger. The performances are good, though frequently over-the-top (particularly Penn). Bacon is the most enjoyable to watch.
I really loved the book but Helgeland did a knockout adaptation. Devastating performance by Tim Robbins.
I liked this film until the very end when Jimmy and his wife turn cold blooded. Her "you are a king" bullshit ruined this film for me.
