If you're an artist and you're significant other is an artist, then you must watch this film. Especially if you are planning to get married. A very underrated film by Martin Scorsese.
A beautiful 1977, 1:66:1 musical, both touching & funny; we see every angle of Francine (Minnelli) and Jimmy (De Niro). Scorsese makes deliberate, methodic, and deep cuts to the very heart of passion & romance; exhibiting permutations of love & lust, show business & family. Single most interesting and persistent motif is the disenchanting, sometimes paradoxical light cast on popular supposition & success. (IV/V)
Scorsese's most experimental movie. What happens when real people live in a formalistic setting? New york, New york. I love it in full. Very close to Ford.
Despite the wonderful "Happy Endings" number and one or two other wonderful numbers from Liza, I'm gonna have to rate this one two stars for being boring as hell with really awkward dialogue. I don't know what went wrong, I love Scorsese, DeNiro, Minnelli, and musicals. This was just too long and too odd for my taste.
Like aliens making a sci-fi musical while on quaaludes. And, it almost works!
I love when Jimmy goes to see Francine's concert, his walk to his table, it's very romantic in a not sappy way. It's cool, Johnny Cash sort of cool.
I wish that Scorsese would remake this! When he made this in the 70's, it was highly ambitious and it showed a lot of talent, but he wasn't ready for it yet. He was still learning. Now I bet he would make it into a masterpiece!
Scorsese's take on "The Red Shoes" mythology, mixed with his acid trip vision of a "film noir musical". Magic.
I got so excited that this was added to the database that I immediately favorited it! In truth it really isn't one of my favorites. I do think it is seriously flawed, HOWEVER I also think it is seriously underrated. Despite its flaws I think it does work wonderfully, and is a very very good film.
