I have an affinity for anthologies of shorts, although I can’t really say why, because the weaker stories always tend to outnumber the few that shine. It frequently results in a disjointed experience. That said, I was able to get something out of every one of Jarmusch’s stories. Highlights include Gena Rowlands’ understated but seasoned performance, the energy and charm of the New York piece, the revolving themes and dialogue of the Paris piece, Roberto Benigni’s manic banter (pumpkins!), and Matti Pellonpää’s tired, mournful face as he recounts his tale of woe in the final segment. It’s not a must-see, but not unworthy of your time either.
