Strange how a movie can be so bitter and so celebratory at once. Giulietta Masina has to give what is easily one of the best performances in the history of film.
Was able to see this in a theater this past weekend, and what an extraordinary experience it was. Giulietta Masina was a revelation, I was just knocked out by her performance as wayward prostitute Cabiria. Now, if only Criterion would re-release it on DVD, as enterprising sorts are asking exorbitant sums for the out-of-print item. A film I am surely looking forward to seeing again, it's a keeper.
While watching this touching movie, I just couldn't take my eyes off Giulietta Masina. She seems so sweet, naive and innocent in this movie - even if Cabiria is a prostitute. She comes across as a lost and lonely little girl, who has just one big dream: falling in love and becoming happy. Is that too much to ask for? Seems like it. But at least, the movie ends with her having a hopeful smile on her beautiful face.
A kinda fun and happy starting story, turns into heartwrenching ending. A true masterpiece from Fellini and a prime performance from Masina.
The final sequence was devastating, and the damage inflicted upon my heart irreparable.
One of those films in which the final shot goes straight to the heart and stays there for the rest of your life. Through those tear-filled eyes, Cabiria looks into the camera, smiles at us, the viewers, just to let us know she's going to be alright. And we truly hope she will. Giuletta Masina's performance is magnificent. and Fellini is at the top of his art which would only be surpassed later with 8 1/2.
What is it about the celebrations at the end of Fellini's movies that are so moving? Is it, partially—precisely—that they are so unwarranted? Only after everything is lost does Fellini think the party should start.
As funny as a girl in a Charlie Chaplin comedy, as sad as a fallen woman in a Kenji Mizoguchi film - Giulietta Masina is a master of both comedy and tragedy. I'm in love.
I wish I had a poster of that last smile Giulietta Masina gives the camera. Perfect in every way, even as a muddy non-Criterion print on Netflix instant.
Magnificent film, Giulietta Masina is truely a joy to watch and has such exquisite facial expressions and body language.
Nights of Cabiria is Fellini's last neorealist film, but that's using the term lightly. Fellini's tragedy of a prostitute looking for love in the modern world is beautifully told. Every scene is sprinkled with the magic of Fellini's deft and gentle direction and of course, Nino Rota's magical score. Masina is stunning in the lead role, and her face just expresses so much. If you don't cry, you simply have no heart.
Re-watched this yesterday, for the fourth time in my life. Sequences like the night spent with Amedeo Nazzari, the pilgrimage at the Divino Amore, the night show with the magician or even the ending made me understand that there's really nothing like this film. God bless Federico Fellini and his high art.
What a fantastic film! I caught it on Sundance a few days ago. Too bad the Criterion costs an arm and a leg...I'd love to own it.
The primary title of this film should probably be "Le notti di Cabiria".
Giulietta Masina's performance is one of the greatest I've ever seen. Phenomenal and unforgettable, not to mention heartbreaking, she cuts to the core with a simple tear filled glance in your direction. Nights Of Cabiria is an unmatched gem.
AWWWW!!! I love this picture, so heart breaking. Witty and interesting on the situations in which Cabiria finds her self in. But, yet sorrowful and beautiful. The ending for me gave me hope for her character and eventually she would find something of worth. As well as that she would stay sweet, no matter what would happen to her. I don't think she would give up ever wanting to be loved and looking for love.
