Synopsis

No Subtitles Necessary follows the lives of renowned cinematographers László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond from escaping the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary to present day. As film students in Hungary, they shot footage of the Russian invasion of Budapest and subsequently volunteered to smuggle it out of the country. Barely escaping with their lives, they fled to America and settled in Hollywood, eventually saving enough money to buy their own 16mm camera to begin shooting movies. –Cannes Film Festival

fun companion piece to 'intro to new hollywood' classes. name-checked some under-seen films, which it's always good to highlight/remember, i.e. 'scarecrow'

A good introduction to two of the most influential DPs of the new Hollywood era. At times, I don't think the settings serve the doc well, but I'm sure it must have been difficult to get them to put their cameras down for a while to speak.

Very interesting documentary, but please, ask Sharon Stone to stop talking like she represents charity foundations!
