Philipp Stölzl studied Set Design at the Münchner Kammerspiele theater. He then worked as a freelance set designer and exhibition architect with, among others, Robert Wilson. He gained international recognition with his video productions. The British design magazine Shots praised the new director on his work for the US. His videos for Garbage and Madonna however led the way to his international breakthrough. His films include: MORITURI TE SALUTANT (short, 2000), BABY (2002), NORTH FACE (NORDWAND, 2008), and GOETHE! (2010). —german-films.de
Each viewing of the incredibly impressive "Nordwand" genuinely brings forth new discoveries. The cinematography is outstanding and the production design is overall pretty immaculate. The blustering snow atop the Eiger is contrasted with the warm glow of a fireplace indoors at the base hotel, and this works marvellously well. Although unbearably stressful at times, this film is a beautiful piece of historic fiction.
Finally sat down and watched this after having wanted to for a couple years now. Completely gut-wrenching and well worth the wait. Feels a little long in parts but it’s not often a movie gets much emotion out of me and this got a lot at one point, so it makes up for it in strides. Recommended if you want to get chilly.
I absolutely adored this film! I had pre-ordered it the minute it was available and it was a fine investment. I can't get over how incredibly it was shot!
I don't recall any of my dreams from last night but I woke up several times and my first thoughts were still harking back to this film, more specifically them being in peril on the mountain side. My great uncle was a mountain climber who fell to his death in 1927 and he has a posthumously published book of his poems entitled "The Unclimbed Peak", so via a bit of ancestry I can relate to films like this but it's not often they actually get to me as this one did. Definitely going into the "get other people to see it" file.
Still feel the need to have a warm cup of tea and a blanket wrapped around myself...so much snow, ice, cold, and tension.
