Johnson's film could have been better, in my opinion. Although, I do agree with your "John Nobody" point.
This film's an interesting insight into John Lennon's past to see what made him the man he was. Brilliant acting from the casts especially from Aaron Johnson of his remarkable performance portraying John Lennon. The mood of the film brings the combination of both inspiration and depression. But I wonder, however, whether the story would still be interesting if the subject had been "John Nobody"? hmmm..
i found this really good on me... i can feel the drama. better than i first expected. good biopic
I would have liked to see the film really emphasize how the events in it impacted John Lennon's overall life and attitudes (I count myself as a Beatles fan, but I'm far FAR from a scholar). Nonetheless, this is really good drama and the performances are some of the most well-played you'll find from the year 2009 (I like Aaron Johnson and Anne-Marie Duff especially).
Nice movie for whoever doesn't know much about John's background. Doesn't tell it all, but at least it shows some important stuff.
A "biopic" of the early life of John Lennon visiting his mother(s) complex. Not really a "beatles" pic but more of a docudrama hypothesing Lennon's upbringing and its effects on his later development. Aaron Johnson not a bad Lennon, Scott-Thomas somewhat miscast here but Anne-Marie Duff a revelation as Julia. Every scene Duff is in belong solely to her. Can't say I'm a fan of the film but that performance wow.
Ok.it' John Lennon, so it's always cool. But the film sometimes seems to force a little too much the (sexual) tension between him and his mother..Anyway: it works! specially if you like Beatles (and who doesn't?)
http://bit.ly/eAAyuW New Review available at Above the Line -- a solid film that explores the early years of John Lennon before the Beatles. A well done, beautifully realized and artful film that takes care of the material without a heavy hand or over-simplified plot. A must see for fans and film goers alike.
A surprisingly well made film that might just as easily be about anyone as John Lennon; the struggle for identity and creative expression, the turmoil of adolescence and the long, long journey to becoming the person you've only dreamed about. Sam Taylor Wood handles the material with ease, a balancing act as she navigates truth and fiction, character and enigma with poise, gentleness and grace.
An evocative look at John Lennon's teenage years in Liverpool. http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2011/01/these-memories-lose-their-meaning.html
Uma biografia bacaninha. Mostra um lado de Lennon que eu não conhecia. Por se tratar de um filme sobre uma das pessoas mais conhecidas, eu esperava mais. De qualquer forma, boa atuação dos atores.
Kinda generic, in a good, Douglas Sirk-way. And it has three brilliant lead performances.
Eis o charme.
An entertaining coming of age drama, one that would touch you even if it were not about John Lennon.Compelling portrayal of his development, the influence of his mother and aunt, and life in Liverpool in the 50's and 60's. Wonderful performance by Aaron Johnson and the supporting cast.
A paint by numbers music bio that offers no real insight into its characters. Still, well acted, but hollow.
This is a heartfelt film, intricately written and directed, not to mention the performance Aaron Johnson, who plays a young John Lennon, completely undaunted. It's basically a psychological story of a young man who grows up in a seemingly cold household with his aunt, estranged from his biological mother while struggling with the sudden death of his aunt's husband. All in all, a very caring, sweet and wonderful film.
