I just love this film! Probably my second favorite Coen brothers film (Miller's Crossing still remains my number).
What a weak Coen film! Seriously, how can these boys make a masterpiece one minute and a weak film such as this the next?
Once you've read the source material, it's pretty comparable. I've had that experience at school once.
John T is amazing here as well. Great talk by him here http://fora.tv/2009/01/30/John_Turturro_at_The_New_School#fullprogram
One of the most quotable comedies ever, with a great soundtrack, intelligent writing and fun characters. I never get tired of this movie!
***1/2. Good comedy, good actors, good screenplay. Way better than THE BIG LEBOWSKY, the precedent film of the Coen brothers. While TBL was mainly intended to an American audience, O BROTHER, inspired by Homer, one of the fathers of western literature, handles themes universally understandable. As the blind poet used to say: "If someone in the future wants to adapt The Odyssey, let it be in the American Deep South".
Oh Brother Where Art Thou? was when I first heard of it simply another seeming spoof on the South, but once I saw it I had not laughed so hard in so long nor appreciated old time religious music of the sort I'd never heard yet loved it. I rate it 5 stars plus.
