Director

Original

Steven Soderbergh

At the age of 26, Steven Soderbergh permanently altered the face of independent cinema when he became the youngest-ever winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival for sex, lies and videotape, his feature-film directorial debut. A simmering exploration of the nature of modern relationships and the links between sexuality and voyeurism, the film was an international sensation that established its director as one of the golden boys of world cinema. Born in Georgia on January 14, 1963, Soderbergh grew up in Baton Rouge, LA, where his father was the Dean of Louisiana State University’s College of Education. While still in high school, Soderbergh enrolled in the university’s film animation class and began making short 16 mm films with second-hand equipment. Even the inspired "Julia Roberts" and Bruce Willis cameos couldn't quite stop the plot from trainwrecking. All the same, I don't think I can give any film with George Clooney in a crisp suit under three stars.

One of Soderbergh's most blatantly experimental films, made all the more remarkable for being produced by a major Hollywood studio, is also one of his best. As Chris McEwen states below, the film is a post-modern melange of Lester's comic surrealism with Godard's playful deconstruction, but filtered through Soderbergh's continual experiments with technique (colour, composition, style, structure). An audacious film!

That's great, Jack. I hope you enjoy it. The rest of my follow list seem to hate it, which is a bit of a shame. Let me know what you think.

A defiant anti-sequel, and the purest distillation of Soderbergh's two primary influences (Lester and Godard) in his filmography yet. Much more enjoyable when you realize it's all purposefully inconsequential.

I don't quite understand the hate for this. It's easily the best of the three to me.
