Synopsis

Inspired by singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 hit song of the same name, director Max Baer Jr.‘s haunting drama recounts the tragic tale of a young man’s desperate struggle with self-acceptance. Flush with the desire of teenage passion, Billy Joe (Robby Benson) pledges his love for beautiful Bobbie Lee (Glynnis O’Connor). But after he loses himself in a sexual encounter with another man, Billy becomes ensnared by guilt and despair.
