Strange blend of Russian chamber drama, silent film conventions, Siamese twins and s&m. Shot in sepia the look of the film is very fitting like a long passed relic discovered. Performances vary but the emotionless Sergei Makovetsky and the innocence lost of Dinara Drukarova are both quite striking. Bizarre, kinky but fascinating.
NOT a family movie, that's for sure. This is a remarkable combination between eroticism and freakishness. The wonderful Russian landscape, the vintage look caused by the sepia color, the exaggerated movements and facial expressions of the characters and the title cards inserted within the story line provide an excellent mise-en-scene. Oh, and let's not forget the spanking part.I guess that's how Mother Russia likes it.
the mood and setting contributed a great deal to the film's theme of who is the freak ? the Ivan in the bowler hat , white skin and death's head grin was very compelling as he made sadism seem an ordinary part of life; the oddly unpopulated stark cityscapes and the audiences full of portly older men made us feel as if we were participating on someone's fantasy of long ago.
