Synopsis

An (unnamed) Guy is a Dublin guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad’s Hoover repair shop by day, and singing and playing for money on the Dublin streets by night. An (unnamed) Girl is a Czech who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and takes care of her mom and her daughter by night. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other as the Girl helps the Guy to put together a demo disc that he can take to London in hope of landing a music contract. During the same several day period, the Guy and the Girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs. –IMDb

What seemed romantic and fresh on release now unfortunately feels a touch contrived and corny. Song score still holds up quite well. Film has probably been overshadowed by the real life love story and its implosion making the events here a little less moving. Mind you any romance film that winds up in unrequited love is still a bit of a novelty and the chemistry between Hansard and Irglova still burns the image.

I found myself enjoying this movie immesly thanks to the lead duo and their musical numbers. The movie really has a heart and does not end up too cheezy and predictable. Both beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

First of all, this isn’t a cliche movie, but it also isn’t a indie masterpiece, like many people called it. There’s no doubt of its unique way to astonish, and some of the scenes were indeed filmed…  read review
