An (unnamed) Guy is a Dublin guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad’s Hoover repair shop by day, and singing and playing for money on the Dublin streets by night. An (unnamed) Girl is a Czech who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and takes care of her mom and her daughter by night. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other as the Girl helps the Guy to put together a demo disc that he can take to London in hope of landing a music contract. John Carney (born 1972) is an Irish film and TV writer/director who specialises in low-budget indie films. He is best known for his award-winning 2007 movie Once. He is also a co-creator of the Irish TV drama series Bachelors Walk.
Carney was born in Dublin. He was bassist for Irish rock band The Frames between 1991 and 1993 and also directed some of their music videos.
In addition to shooting music videos, Carney also wrote and directed two award-winning short films (Shining Star and Hotel) before making his first feature. With fellow film-maker Tom Hall, Carney wrote and directed November Afternoon, his first feature film, in 1996. Despite a limited release, it was acclaimed as the “Film of the Year” by the Irish Times.The low-budget drama, shot in black and white, tells the story of two couples whose relationships begin to crumble over an eventful weekend. What seemed romantic and fresh on release now unfortunately feels a touch contrived and corny. Song score still holds up quite well. Film has probably been overshadowed by the real life love story and its implosion making the events here a little less moving. Mind you any romance film that winds up in unrequited love is still a bit of a novelty and the chemistry between Hansard and Irglova still burns the image.
I found myself enjoying this movie immesly thanks to the lead duo and their musical numbers. The movie really has a heart and does not end up too cheezy and predictable. Both beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
Some day people will hear the anthemic ballad “Falling Slowly” and have absolutely no idea that it formed the emotional core of the most beloved film of the 2000s.
