There seems to be some confusion about how much footage is being restored. I've heard the full version is 269, which means they're adding 40 minutes, not 25, although if there's overture music for the intermission that counts, or if they're releasing it as two films (with two sets of opening credits and two sets of closing credits) that may help explain the discrepancies.
There should be a double-bill with Once Upon A Time In The West - if one is a paean to American free enterprise (and how the country was built), the other is a story of how the principals are subsumed in a mire of ego, betrayal and greed. And to me, both are endlessly compelling.
If there is one valuable skill Leone proved to have during his entire career, is the masterful handling of material this dense and present it with all its narrative nuances while never being tedious or something even remote to it, and despite the everlasting problems of poor female characterizations and stilted dialogue still lingering here, the result is remarkable and endlessly compelling.
"The Godfather Trilogy" is to family as "Once Upon A Time In America" is to memory.
Once Upon a Time in America was Sergio Leone's dream project and it took him almost two decades to realize his dream. OUTA is a testament to Leone's penchant for Cinema and his absolute adherence to its free spirit as an Art form. After the stylistic force of 'Time In The West' successfully won me into westerns I had high hopes of this film redeeming Gangster films for me. Yet I have to admit I wasn't quite sold. I was first off taken a bit back by how gruesome some of it was and how much more sexuality was involved, 'West' had a lot more stylistic fun vs gritty realism. Which perhaps is the difference in genre. All in all a but underwhelmed.
Magnificient piece of art. Long stuff but really worth it. And it confirms what I thought : revenge is an useless dish.
I was too lucky to watch this movie two times in one day ! *Sigh* .. Chapeau to James Woods
What the fuck is with the casual rape, more sexist than Irreversible in my opinion...
"Once Upon a Time in America" is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Completely unexpected, and even at nearly 4 hours, not at all boring. The most distinct, idiosyncratic gangster movie I've seen.
Epic and hypnotic - Leone's best along with '...West'. On a par with The Godfather.
I just saw it for the tenth time -probably- last night on big screen, and, it confirmed once again to be my favorite film of all-time. There may be films that are superior to this in terms of aesthetic quality, formal qualities or literary design; yet, no other film has the same emotional impact on me. Surely, Morricone's score plays a huge part in its power.
BC, only two stars? there are so many elements to this that are masterful...his talents are clearly lagging but only two?
I was 14 the first time I watched this. I had to undergo surgery at the time and my father gave me a DVD copy as a present for me. Could you imagine? The directing, the soundtrack, Robert De Niro's state.of-the-art performance... everything amazed me! Guys, I owe a lot to this film.
