Sergio Leone's greatest tribute to the Western genre, Once Upon a Time in the West is a piquant cocktail of style and substance, potent enough to catapult the viewer into a whirlpool of incessant excitement. A beautiful opera of a film, luxuriating in the myths of the West and the conventions of the Western, and cognizant of the fact that cinema itself is nothing without myth.
Probabilty the great western ever. Uunforgettable the initial part of the film and the final duel (Henry Fonda vs Charles Bronson, what a fantastic players!!!!) . not any word, only soundtrack, sequence of memories, only great cinema. It's like a classic novel. Wordeful Claudia Cardinale. Many compliments to Sergio Leone.
Let's not forget to mention Ennio Morricone, whom fertilized the film with his musical accompaniment.
With the daring to go where the genre had not yet been, what's not to love? Says The Spaghetti Western database's Phil H., "More of an epic than an action adventure. More of a work of art than a commercial piece of cinema. On those terms it is peerless and a masterpiece not be missed, a film that doesn't so much set the benchmark for a genre as for film making in general." I agree
“How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can’t even trust his own pants.”
The final showdown is one of the most beautiful marriages between music and image. That scene alone justifies the reason cinema is considered an art form. And despite the epic nature of that confrontation, it is nothing but a minor conflict in the overall story of America's creation, which it's also Leone's most daring contribution to the most American of film genres, the western.
A fine Western. A true icon of the genre. Definitely iconic for its style despite many homages. Four stories converging into one and not everyone will survive by the end. Some pretty badass moments as well.
What can I say at this point? I should be wary of cartoons of the West. But the internal emotions of this film are so powerful and operatic, I can never help but be moved by it. The obligatory "final duel" is the crest of a wave of emotion that's been building: Cardinale discovering the slaughtered family, Harmonica's blurred memories, Morton staring into the painting of the Pacific Ocean... Cinema.
great characters, complex plot, pacing, mystique, scope, atmosphere, larger than life scenes, great acting and music... this film simply has it all with style, due to Leone's exquisite directing and attention to detail. a film that defines the genre for me, an instant favorite
The newly-released Blu-ray looks great. Definitely worth the upgrade for fans of the film.
Lives up to all it's hype, ridiculous at times but breathtakingly epic as well. Paced with an impeccable slow that draws you right into the drama. It features an endlessly memorable score to boot. I never thought I would enjoy a western this much.
This is such an inspired work from Leone, everything from the beautiful, sweeping cinematography to Morricone's memorable score and great performances make this an essential viewing for everyone who actually cares about movies.
One of the most beautiful and most glorious films ever made. My second favorite Leone film....
This is to the western genre what 2001 is the the sci fi genre. By far my favorite Leone film. I even liked it better than the dollars trilogy.
I wanted to like this one but for some reason it just didn't connect with me. Didn't hate it however and there are things about it I loved like Fonda as the villain. I think I'll need to give this one another viewing...
