A teenage girl goes on a magical journey of self discovery through a surrealistic forest after she is kicked out of school. Tereza crosses the beautiful Slovak countryside en route to the city where her mother lives. During her journey, she has many strange adventures and meets assorted weird characters, including a sad young man who is about to marry a woman old enough to be his mother, an old woman who is buried up to her waist and a man whose job is to destroy as many things as possible. From one of Slovakia’s best directors, Martin Sulík.

Martin Šulík

Director and scriptwriter Martin Šulík (b. 1962, Žilina, Slovakia) graduated in film and television direction from VŠMU (1986). He is Slovakia’s most appreciated and prolific film director of the past 20 years. In 1986-91 he worked as assistant director, occasionally directed for the theatre, acted in movies, and shot documentaries. Since the early 1990s he has mainly focused on features, distinguishing himself for his poetic-symbolic tone. —scanorama.lt

Orbis Pictus presents itself as a quirky film about a young girl journeying in ignorance of the world around her. Yet there's an underlying sense of menace here, as through various encounters the main character's innocence is tested against a darker side of reality that, while only hinted at, is a disturbing presence all the same and sets up perfectly for the film's finale.
