Synopsis

Cristina is twenty years old. Her father was declared missing in action during the war in Angola many years before. One day in church the girl meets a man about fifty years old who tries various times, unsuccessfully, to make the sign of the cross. The man is called Cristovão. A few days later the two meet again. The man offers to help her look for her father. A relationship based on memories and confessions is formed between them. But soon they each return to their own solitude. – Toronto Film Festival

Alberto Seixas Santos

Alberto Jorge Seixas dos Santos was born on March 20, 1936 in Lisbon, Portugal. He Studied Historical-Philosophical Sciences at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. In 1958, he started to work as a film critic. He also studied in Paris, at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in 1962 and, during the next year, at the London Film School.

Seixas Santos, who belongs to a generation of film club lovers, is part of the cinematic movement called Novo Cinema (New Cinema) and started to shoot documentaries – A Arte e o Ofício de Ourives and Indústria Cervejeira em Portugal (1968). In 1970, he was one of the founders of the Portuguese Cinema Center.

Brandos Costumes, his first feature-film, shot between 1972 and 1975 and written together with the writers Luísa Neto Jorge and Nuno Júdice, draws a line between everyday life of a medium bourgeoisie family and the path of the regime of the military coup of the May 28th, 1926.
