I love this collection. Absolutely. While some of the shorts aren’t wonderful, many of them are amazing, not to mention the collection boasts a bunch of great directors. I think my favorites were 14th Arrondissement, Le Marais, Quais de Seine, Tuileries, Pere Lechaise, Montmartre, and Bastille. And the vampire one, for its adorable campiness. 14th is a sweet and simple voice-over by Alexander Payne, following a middle-aged American postal worker, Carol, both around Paris, and through her recited report. Her bad French makes the whole thing more endearing. It’s sad to see her alone, but you feel relieved as she starts to embrace the city. It was a great choice for ending the collection. Le Marais is also sweet, a story following the meeting of two guys who connect, but are hindered by a language barrier. Van Sant leaves it open-ended, with one guy running off after the other. Tuileries is brilliant and quirky, and totally epitomizes the Coen Brothers style. The shorts are organized well, which makes all the difference. This compilation is sweet, long-lasting, and it leaves a good taste in your mouth, just like a chocolate heart. Watch it with someone you love.
