Laconic and dry storytelling, in sync with the central character's state of mind. Pascual Duarte is a peasant who gradually gets sickened by the customs and rituals of the society he lives in. He cannot deal with his anger and frustration, hence he unleashes his fury first over the animals, and then over people.
