Mireille Balin had a rough life, ultimately, but, for what it is worth, she won't be forgotten as long as anyone remembers this film.
"If I were an architect and I had to build a monument to the cinema, I would place a statue of Julien Duvivier above the entrance….This great technician, this rigorist, was a poet." -- Jean Renoir

Such a sexy film. Gabin and Balin are all over each other with their eyes. I love them in their other film together, "Gueule d'amour." He was one of greatest romantic actors in film history. Even playing opposite a man he was not afraid to show affection. Look at him in the final scenes in "Grand Illusion" opposite Dalio.
I can't get the ending out of my head! If this were an American film, Pepe would have screamed, Gaby would have heard him, and it would have been happy times in the Casbah. But this is poetic realism. Compares well with Le Jour Se Leve.
