“A tourist on permanent vacation.” This line could really serve as a summation of Jarmusch’s underlying theme in his body of work thus far. And certainly, there are traces of his signature here that would blossom as soon as Paradise. With that said, this is really only for Jarmusch completists; it’s interesting to see how he’s progressed. But the charming qualities of his later characters are curiously absent here with the exception of Aloysius. And in terms of narrative thread, Jim has done the whole wandering and meeting different people type of story better in his later films – as it naturally should be.
