Censoring Botticelli's Birth of Venus ! Now that is some sick, twisted shit...
A nigh perfect realisation of what it feels to not belong, this examination of a young girl's life as she grows up in Iran is a truly affecting piece of cinema. Beautifully written, fantastically animated and wonderfully voiced (French version) it is, despite its imperfect ending, a shining example of masterclass filmmaking. As close to a masterpiece as a film can be without quite being one.
Tunisia's post-Arab Spring forward into a world of ideas and differences have been tested with Nessma TV's recent broadcast of Marjane Satrapi's acclaimed animated adaptation of her autobiographical graphic novel series. Persepolis which won the 2007 Cannes Jury Prize contains an imaginary depiction of a deity a young Marjane talks to which sparked violent protests among Islamic conservatives. Recommended viewing.
Strong and gentle at the same time. It doesn't even seem an animated movie. A must see!
A wonderful piece of animation. It has a great style of surrealism but keeps it within the boundaries of reality for the story. Fantastic.
