Synopsis

In the final years of the 19th century, Pierre Curie would be spending peaceful and studious days in his laboratory at the Paris Physics and Chemistry School with his colleague Gustave Bémont, were it not for the head of the school, Mr Schutz. The latter is obsessed by academic honours and hounds Curie for communiqués that will make good impression on the members of the Science Academy. In this way, Mr Schutz hopes to obtain the prestigious Academic Palm for himself. Schutz’s latest idea to increase the lab’s activity is a Polish student named Marie Sklodowska whom Pierre Curie is obliged to accept. Marie soon has the sky, reserved and upright research scientist wrapped around her little finger. Before he even realizes what is happening, Pierre sees his laboratory turned into a kitchen where Slavic dishes simmer on the stove, where dynamite is made for Polish resistance fighters and an equally explosive herb vodka steeps in bottles. Once things have calmed down, Pierre finds out that Marie has great scientific skills and, both to satisfy Schutz and to face the toughest scientific problems of the day, Pierre and Marie get to work and discover, in succession, radioactivity, radium and, in the process, true love. —uniFrance
