It`s beautiful, variegated, funny and smart. I wish more films were like it.
I sensed a little piece of Summer Interlude here. Now I know why Godard reckons it as Bergman's best work.
"Film is like a battleground. There's love, hate, action, violence, death... in one word: emotion. "
I don't think I completely understood it, but there's something about this film that I really liked quite a lot. The use of color (particularly red, yellow, blue, and white) is very stylish, and I hope to see more of that as I check out the rest of Godard's early work, as this is the first of his films I've seen.
Lacks the charm and charisma of Breathless and Vivre sa Ve, but not as repulsive as I found Week End to be. Anna Karina made it 4 stars.
Not as accessible or entertaining as his earlier work; fascinating use of color. I'd say it was a bit on the pretentious side, but there are too many musical numbers for that.
all the things Godard have done before are basically nothing compared to this... what a masterpiece
i think this film is actually only worth about three stars, but i really enjoy watching it, so i'm giving it a little more credit. the colors and compositions are fantastic, and Belmondo easily covers any flaws of ambivalence.
My favourite Godard film along with Alphaville and Bande a Part. After this he made the odd great film here and there but His run from Breathless to Pierrot le Fou has never been matched.
So necessary. With every watch it gets better and better. A film that truly looks at romance, rebellion, and desire. 5/5.
Pretty staggering at its best, but let's not pretend it doesn't have a few issues with its third act.
At some moments i was loving it and at some others i felt totally indifferent to it; i know Godard is not about a cohesive narrative but still the film felt very uneven to me in its rhythm . Sadly the DVD i watched had an horrendous picture quality. In any case what i liked I really liked it so i'll definitely want to watch again.
