Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penélope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love — or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
Taking his cue from such profusely talented dancer/choreographer-turned-directors as Bob Fosse, former Broadway hoofer Rob Marshall made a scintillating leap into film with his directorial debut Chicago (2002).
Born in Wisconsin and raised in Pittsburgh, Marshall began his professional career at age 12 when he joined a local musical theater company. Though he took time off from college to join a touring company of the 1970s Broadway smash A Chorus Line, Marshall returned to school and earned a degree from Carnegie Mellon University’s musical theater program. Leaving Pittsburgh after school, he moved to New York City in the early ‘80s to join the ranks of Broadway “gypsies” vying for a place in the chorus. Marshall sang and danced in several Broadway shows, and worked his way up behind the scenes from dance captain to assistant choreographer. Marshall, however, suffered an injury while dancing in Cats; he subsequently decided to quit performing to concentrate on choreography. He… read more
Most people went into Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides completely wrong. It's a Disney film. Sure, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan are missing but I think we're all agreed on that Jack Sparrow and Barbossa steal the show, as they did in the other films. On Stranger Tides has all the solid PG rated action, snazzy special effects and great one-liners that make it worth watching in that kind of environment.
Awful. Just... awful. Which is a shame given that I genuinely like Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane & Stephen Graham.
Tried watching it but did not know whether I was watching a film or a trailer or a randomly generated sequence if dull action scenes, utterly pointless and bald. It literally feels like something that has been digested three times before, puked out to be eaten again, yummy . . . Stay away from it.
Wadding through a roster of blockbuster wannabes can feel less like watching than rummaging, a scavenger hunt in which one scans every corner
Updated through 5/20. Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which opened the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, already has its own entry, of course
Attendu par certains, appréhendé par d’autres, Pirates des Caraïbes 4 : la fontaine de jouvence a réussi à éviter le pire sans pour autant briller d’une quelconque façon. Reprenant les mêmes ingrédients… read review
