The conventions in this film predate Jarmusch. This be New Wave.
A film about semiotics and futility. Not the best of the "Romanian New Wave" that I've seen, but definitely a good film. Like many of the films of the movement it is deliberately paced and darkly funny. It is less subtle than I've come to expect from the "New Wave" but no less effective.
during this film I've always had the impression that the director is trying to test the public's patience by submitting it to 2 hours of endless hope. hope that something, anything would happen. spoiler: it didn't.
Certainly not a Hollywood type police drama---not much action, just focus on the tedious, measured pace of police work. We are drawn into the fascinating dilemma faced by this Cop,with sparse dialogue where every word matters.
I love that part of the conversation about that song of "what's the sea without the sun" yabada yibidi. Very light, funny, yet goes deep into philosophical realm
It is a film that will drive you positively insane in the theater, but will leave you reflecting upon both the film's devilishly clever structure and your own accomplishment as the most staunch of moviegoer for sitting through the sometimes overwhelming tedium of Police, Adjective. Decidedly not for all tastes, but if high concept art filmmaking interests you, don't overlook this one.
A film not without flare & wit. But for all of that, this film was painful to watch. Reminds me of an afternoon spent viewing my uncles 1960's hoilday slide show, which lasted three hours. It's a shame I didn't enjoy this film because its rare to see Romanian films in the cinemas.
Maddeningly slow-paced. Any elements of a compelling story are drowned out by vast stretches of mind-numbing minutia. A common scene in this film would be an endless extended take of a character walking down a dreary street. Then maybe he goes home and eats dinner. That's 40 minutes right there. I've heard arguments for how brilliant this film is, but it must have all been lost on me, because I was bored to tears.
One thing I've learned about Romanian women from this film is that they really know their grammar.
The policeman has no clothes. Where is the adjective in that sentence?
Rod you're right and Kafka seems to have inspired this film from the beginning to the end.
This just blew my mind. Probably the most original film I've seen in a long long time.
"[...] there is a criterion for deciding whether a film is pornographic or not, and it is based on the calculation of wasted time. [...] Go into a movie theater. If, to go from A to B, the characters take longer than you would like, then the film you are seeing is pornographic." (Umberto Eco - How to Recognize a Porn Movie) If you are into porn movies check out "Police, Adjective". :)
Gripping, hypnotic portrait of a Romanian undercover narcotics officer who has a crisis of conscience when he is ordered to arrest a teenager who smokes hash after school. Solid filmmaking.
