Synopsis

George Barber is, if nothing else, dead – of gruesome, unnatural causes. While police detective Berkley and his assistant Williams set out to unravel the mystery, we glimpse various permutations of George’s lives and relationships with Joyce. As George puts it, “Each of us exists in an infinite number of possible worlds.” For George, existence is comprised of simultaneous dimensions. In one of these countless parallel universes, George and Joyce grew up in the same small, northern town; they’ve been married most of their lives. In another, they meet as strangers and have a casual affair. In yet another world, Joyce has never before in her life seen George. Looming behind these realms of romantic possibilities is a world where science has gone insanely awry. –Inbaseline

Robert Lepage

Robert Lepage, CC, OQ (born December 12, 1957 in Québec City) is a playwright, actor, film director, and stage director from Québec City, Québec, and is one of Canada’s most honoured theatre artists.

Lepage was raised in Québec City. At age five, he was diagnosed with a rare form of alopecia, which caused complete hair loss over his whole body. As a teenager he struggled with depression, and turned to drama classes to conquer his shyness.

Between 1975 and 1978, he studied theatre at Québec City’s Conservatoire d’Art Dramatique. He subsequently participated in workshops at Alain Knapp’s theatre school in Paris, France.

After coming back to Québec City, he wrote, directed and played in a few independent productions and joined Théâtre Repère in 1982. With that company, he created Circulations (1984), which was presented across Canada and won an award as best Canadian production during La Quinzaine Internationale de Théâtre de Québec. The following year, he created… read more

The first half, especially the police procedural stuff, plays like a made-for-TV movie (the credits seem to indicate as much). The second half, though marginally more interesting (and, thankfully, with more for Tilda Swinton to do), still seems slight and uninspired. The few "mind-bender" moments (including the use of a house that was maybe *Lost Highway*-inspired) add up to a zero-sum take on what could've been ...
