Director

Original

Mike Newell

After first establishing himself as a craftsman of character-driven dramas and lighthearted romantic comedies in his native England, director Mike Newell ventured across the pond to direct several acclaimed American films, as well as a few major Hollywood blockbusters. Newell became known on British television with his acclaimed adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ “The Man in the Iron Mask” (ITC, 1977) before making his feature film debut with the graphic horror movie, “The Awakening” (1980). Having established himself within a diversity of genres, he was free to choose his own course, which eventually led to the acclaimed biographical drama, “Dance With a Stranger” (1985), and the charming romantic comedy, “Enchanted April” (1991). Guilty pleasure, totally cliché, but also really nice and well shot by Newell.

Surprisingly engaging, despite the poor casting and unbelievably bad accents (apparently all ancient Persians were white Englishmen). This had some sequences that echoed the video game mechanics very well, and many of the (albeit computer enhanced) locations were very lush and beautiful. It is preferable to look at the film this could have been, rather than harp on the flaws. Oh, and Gemma Arterton is stunning.

I appreciate the elaborate stage sets and story telling. Main lead played by Jake Gyllenhaal lacked conviction despite Ben Kingsley's presence. It could have been an epic of proportions if there were less hocky elements such as the dagger and the sands of time.

Run-of-the-Mill POTC rip-off

Prince of Persia is a Bruckheimer alright. Lots of Pomp, Action, Sounds pumped into simple story, the characters are all rather one-dimensional and the film never ceases to add heaps of comic relief…  read review
