Synopsis

The fiercely independent Vincent Gallo has again stepped behind the camera to make his third feature film, a work destined to become almost as controversial as his notorious The Brown Bunny. But, despite the subject matter, Promises Written in Water is a beautifully contemplative piece of retro filmmaking, striking in its similarities to the formally adventurous work common in the sixties. Shooting in 16mm black and white, Gallo serves up a visually hypnotic film, hanging his narrative around a disturbing but moving whisper of a plot. As the title suggests, Gallo is more interested in poetry than in sensation.

The film revolves around a beautiful young woman who is terminally ill. She resists hospitalization, determined to die on her own terms, but her one fear is the fate that awaits her body after she dies. Cremation is her final wish, so she reaches out to a photographer who promises that he will indeed carry out her dying request. Shortly after she dies, he takes a job in a funeral parlour. What follows is a dreamy mix of reverie, anger and grief, separated into a series of extended confrontations and verbal exchanges, all sharply observed by an unmoored camera, which is allowed to roam around rooms, actors and situations in search of elusive moments of understanding. Repetition is a constant trope, as if the act of revisiting will ease the pain and aid in understanding.

Gallo’s film is as individualistic a piece of filmmaking as you will find in today’s cinema. Unencumbered by commercial considerations, he is admittedly making films for himself. This freedom, almost impossible in today’s marketplace, grants his imagination total precedence. In Promises Written in Water the pain of the everyday collides with the transcendence of the elusive, turning this remarkable piece of virtuoso filmmaking into something impressively unique. –TIFF

Director

Original

Vincent Gallo

Vincent Gallo. American born, Buffalo, New York, 1961. Left home, moved to New York City in 1978, and began playing in the experimental musical group Gray with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. After leaving Gray he formed the band Bohack and recorded the highly regarded avant-garde industrial noise album It Took Several Wives.

During the same period Gallo also became known in New York City for his very unusual street performances, which were spontaneously executed in public and also witnessed by invited guests in the know. The One Armed Man, The Man with No Face, Sandman, Boy Hit by a Car, and Boy Cries in Restaurant Window to name a few. These radical public performances were upsetting and disturbing and were meant to provoke thought, self-reflection and consciousness. Gallo’s invited guests could witness his performance’s impact in this larger public context.

One invited guest, New York Underground filmmaker Eric Mitchell, cast Gallo as the lead in his film The Way It… read more
