Story-wise, yes. Behind the camera, no.
I love the idea, but I can't help but feel like Anderson was really using Sandler. That makes it even better!
I know its runtime is only 95 minutes but it felt too long for me. Didn't resonate with me as much as I hoped it would.
This is the type of film I imagine Chaplin might have made if he were of this era. Time machine Chaplin.
I saw Magnolia when I was 9.I saw There Will Be Blood when I was 11.I saw Boogie Nights when I was 13.Now at 14,I finally saw Punch-Drunk Love. For what I can recall, this resembles Magnolia more than the others.Other than that, this is Sandler's best performance (the one in Reign On Me being the second) and I loved the visuals. But,I still expect for Adam Sandler to kick the shit out of Hoffman.
To be fair, Barry is the one to be blamed on his troubles, he creates them. to be fair once again, any man would be like he is with 7 sisters like he has. the problem is not the number of sisters, don't get me wrong, the problem is their personalities.
Adam Sandler gives his best performance to date in this offbeat but compelling and visually dazzling love story.
Adam Sandler proves here that he wastes his talents in all of his other movies. I loved Anderson's use of music and camera. The cinematography by Robert Elswit is gorgeous.... just brilliant!
Pffff... I thought that the rhythm was awful, that the character's awkwardness did not work a bit and that the story worked even less! I didn't find it even remotely funny and I had to force myself watching it till the end.
Awkward and annoying. Made me think of what 15 year old me thought romance was. It just frustrated me because it was PTA mostly
my favourite PT Anderson movie. Adam Sandler is magnificent here, elemental even. This film's closest relationship is with silent film, Barry Egan moves like Buster Keaton, PDL could be watched silently and enjoyed equally. It also bears a feel very similar to Jacques Tati, the physical comedy of Play Time in particular, the sets, the colours...how many contemporary American films can honestly claim that? wonderful.
A movie where the usual disclaimer about the characters in the film not bearing any resemblance to any persons living or dead is totally unnecessary. Offbeat doesn't always equal good, folks.
PTA is such an incredible director, he got the best out of Sandler casting him against-type and builds this entire world of impending doom around him that is not only inmensely fun to watch but also wildly original. Jacques Tati would be proud.
