eww.
If I were to truly stay away from Nic Cage (the worst actor imo), I would have missed out on this comedic gem. I only gave it a shot because of the Coen brothers, and I'm glad I did. Though the acting was terrible, the script was great. I haven't laughed this hard in a while, and I enjoyed almost every minute.
I found the acting poor, the direction not only heavy-handed but absolutely disappointing, and the script, while entertaining, seemed to outpace the rest of the film, the cast and the plot itself. I'm glad to have seen it, if only to track the Coens' development as artists, but this chaos is less controlled than it is contrived.
noticed glen's bumper sticker? http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2rz54j9&s=7 :>
Cinéphiles and commerce lover both will deny to deal with this picture. It's not among the best Coen movies. But it was big fun for me. There are good performances, even Nicolas Cage is good in his role. John Goodman and Holly Hunter are very good. The screenplay is better than the film itself.
a magical experience. i was a bit fearful at first though - "the Coens wouldn't hurt a baby right?....."
all of it was so freaking funny. it's definitely an interesting story that was presented really well.
After the spaghetti Film Noir with BLOOD SIMPLE, the Coen brothers invented the spaghetti slapstick comedy with RAISING ARIZONA in 1987. The film is not as innovative as their first one because comedy is a genre that often already flirts with unrealism which is, as everybody knows, the trademark of the Coen's cinematographic style. Arizona replaces Texas and Harley - Leonard Smalls - Davidson takes the place of the viscous detective of BLOOD SIMPLE as the mean character. It's funny but but rather pointless. Three stars because of the performance of the actors and the cinematography.
Perhaps the best madcap comedy about the anxiety of being a new parent. The greatest visual metaphor just might be Evelle & Gayle being birthed from their escape tunnel out of prison, screaming and crying, wet with sewage/amniotic fluid. The Greatest American Comedy of The 20th Century. Or my name ain't Nathan Arizona!
Raising Arizona is one of the most creative and corky comedy films of the 80's. The dialogue in the film is of a superb level. 'Arizona is one of the coen brothers most over the top films: The halarious acsents;the colorful environments, and costumes; Nicholas Cages wild hair. Cages character is a product of his time, cause it wasn't easy living with "That son of a bitch Reagan in the White house."
Paradigmatic example of the Coen brothers' fantastically odd, cartoonish and hilarious world of adorable losers. Barry Sonnenfeld's camerawork is amazing.
