Highly stylized despite its oppressive squalor, Ratcatcher reaches for the miserabilist sublime -- and attains it. Examining -- in a kind of trance of weary wonder -- both sides of every mirror, every window, every body, and every body of water, Ramsay's debut everywhere turns up vermin worthy of our pity, and of some kind of love, but she refuses them, and us, the solace of the moon. Instead she pulls us all under.
This was absolutely beautiful. In only one night, I watched 4 Lynne Ramsay films and became a fan. What else could you ask for?
I spend most of my movie-watching time catching up on films from my neverending to-watch list; many of them dissapoint me in some way or another - this didn't. What a fantastic film, brutal, beautiful, frustrating, life-affirming, harrowing, honest etc. Two thumbs up.
Jedan od onih (recimo) depresivnih filmova zbog kojih na kraju filma zatupljeno zuris u credits kako idu priko ekrana ... meni skroz dobar.
The poetic beauty of Terence Davies "The Long Day Closes" meets the grittiness of Shane Meadows and Ken Loach. This is, by far, Lynne Ramsays best feauture film. Loved every second of it.
I'm not quite sure yet what I'll rate this but the word 'beautiful' came to mind several times while watching it.
A great film. Personally, I feel it captures life, the personal interactions that come with it, and those who stray behind its current. Watch it, seriously.
as it turns out, Ratcatcher is not as bleak as the cover, or the prolog suggest. Offers a great amount of hope in every corner. An optimistic film. Great.
A film so beautiful it could steal the Carl Orff/Badlands marimba theme and get away with it.
Great Film I loved how she let her camera float and we capture a intimate understanding of the family's dynamic. So much truth in the way people cope and try to hold it together under horrible conditions..
As Owen Sound pointed out, the movie is in William Eadie's eyes. This reminded me of GUMMO, but a lot less perverse and a hell of a lot more honest.
The heart and soul of this story is in William Eadie's eyes. This tremendous performance ranks up there with Jean-Pierre Léaud in Les Quatre cents coups as one of the most frank and genuine performances by a child.
A compelling debut from Lynne Ramsay. As realistic and grim as it is beautiful. A sensitive work of art.
This is without a doubt my favorite film I've seen. Every scene is touching and beautiful.
What really put it into my favorites, was the little traveling scene of the mouse. For just a tiny, short moment, you and the main character got to escape from that terrible world together. It just seemed so out of place in the movie, which made it that much more beautiful.
The reason we always see the same side of the moon is because the other has been eaten away by tiny rats, I gathered. Watch the film and then go for a walk to let it all sink in.
This film really surprised me. I'm not sure why, but I really liked it. It is a beautifully shot film despite it being about some of the ugly parts of life. Great performances from the children, they were definitley the most engaging part of the film. Something I will be watching again.
I was extremely suprised by this film, I wasnt expecting it to be so engaging and beautifully shot. The actors were great, especially the children, I believe the children were all first time actors too! Very moving film.
