I still think there's more going on here than in The Angels Share.
Another very good direction by Matteo Garrone. The all-colorful-all-enjoyable characters and inspiration of its own should not make it the ordinary drama (comedy really) you may watch most times. Yet the treatment of the subject-matter, the reality tv, the 'I JUST WANTED TO BE ON THE SHOW' dream of another quite famous old film (or its 'NEVER GIVE UP' variation) was a bit thin, made the film quite stale to my taste
Chapeau. 4*
The most realistic depiction of Italy of the past decade. A country split between two kinds of idolatry: television and the church. Considering that in Italy the State and Mass Media are equivalent (i.e. Berlusconi's ownership of tv channels, newspapers, radio...) "Reality" is a meditation on the Belpaese's failure and madness, at micro/macro levels. Once again, Garrone, not Moretti, has grasped the "real" Italy
A complete departure from Gomorrah. A successful picture with some lovely long takes. But, admittedly, it ultimately feels rather slight—partly because the grotesque fascination with, and vapidity of, reality television and the D-list celebrity status that accompanies it already feels dated as a satirical theme. Network, The King of Comedy, and The Truman Show all touched on this material in a more memorable way.
Assuming the typical Italian exuberance, this satire never loses intensity, denoting genuine comical moments, stirring alienation, and powerful images. Review and Rating: http://alwayswatchgoodmovies.blogspot.com/2013/03/reality-2012.html
A perplexing affair, this comment on the insanity and hysteria of people caught up in the hype of instant stardom takes a good 30mins to get going. It's difficult to empathise with any of the characters and a little unsure whether it's a comedy or drama the final act is probably the strongest but overall the subject matter feels a little irrelevant today. Brilliant colour palette and solid camera work. 2.5 stars
*does outdated david spade impression* i liked it better the first time i saw it, when it was called albert brooks' "real life"
Gets a point for chutzpah. How many major Italian directors, who aren't Marco Bellocchio, would say this, even as slyly as Garrone does here? Though it stretches itself past narrative support, it's among the boldest post-modern satires of our time.
well constructed script and skilled craftmanship of Garrone make this movie worth watching and above the average in terms odf cinematic quality; still, the narration is quite uneven and the story doesn't grip to much onto audience brains and guts.
Bel film.
why so many haters? a KVIFF viewing, a 8/10 my review: http://lasttimeisawdotcom.wordpress.com/2012/07/03/last-film-i-saw-reality/
A bad Simpsons-episode stretched out over two painfully long hours. Never poignant, never funny. Great opening sequence. E+
