An American businessman (Richard Gere) finds himself charged with murder and thrown headfirst into China’s nightmarish legal system in this thriller from director Jon Avnet. The director and his co-star, Bai Ling, filmed covertly in Beijing for a week without government approval. For the rest of the footage, production designer Richard Sylbert meticulously re-created the city on a Hollywood back lot, using hundreds of props imported from Beijing.
