Monty and the Duke are terrific together. They have so much screen chemistry… almost the kind you expect from an actor and actress. The ending of the movie is… I hated it the first time I saw it, but the more I thought about the characters, the more I realised: there’s no goddamn way John Wayne is gonna kill Clift. He just wouldn’t do it. The ending is still clumsy, regardless. It’s hard to bring a Hawks film to a close anyways… you just want it to keep on going and going… One of my favourite westerns. More lyrical than Rio Bravo…not as good, but damn close.
