Film sensazionale.
wow this is really great I just love seeing Roman Polanski torturing women oh wait I don't this is actually awful! (yeah I get the "value" of the cinematography and mise-en-scène, the conversion hysteria, the possible comments on gender, sexuality, and mental health. But to me this still just boils down to a rapist torturing a woman, and finding beauty, entertainment, and indeed, titillation, in that torture)
Exemplary of Polanski's bold visual style which is similar to Hitchcock's, albeit sloppier. The film doesn't have much of a plot to boot, which isn't helped by the slight camp. The narrative can be summed up as "bitch is fazed by men, then goes crazy". Nevertheless, I did find it enjoyable for its Hitchcockian elements. It's a flawed masterpiece.
When you think about it, it's just the story of a lesbian being afraid of men.
A solid psychological thriller, one that mixes story and substance in a very effective way!
Crazy never looked so good. Love Chico Hamilton's jazzy and suspenseful score.
I watched this three weeks ago, can't believe I forgot to mubi it. For Shame on me.
Perfectly captures the downward spiral of its disturbed protagonist. An excellent--if unsettling--tale I'm definitely going to revisit.
carol's descent into total madness leaves a bitter taste in your mouth and some scars in your soul. such level of commitment with a movie character is something we'll probably never see in a movie again. not enough polanskis out there.
Roman Polanski's first English-language film deals with a woman's loneliness leading to madness, and yet this is less entertaining to watch. Too much talking and needs some more suspense, this is Polanski at his worst but Catherine Deneuve shines a lot. (Of course, the ending is quite spooky.) Isn't there a better classic thriller than REPULSION?
